Greenfield, Daryl B.; Scott, Marcia S. – Developmental Psychology, 1986
Examines the development of conceptual preference for complementary versus taxonomic relationships in children, 3 to 17 years of age. The triads procedure was used with picture pairings familiar to the younger age group. The data revealed a preference for complementary pairs for all age groups. (Author/BB)

Davidson, Robert E.; Adams, Janice Freeman – J Exp Child Psychol, 1970
Results indicate that verbalization is the preferred symbolic process in young children. Portions of this paper were presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, Los Angeles, California, 1969. (MH)

Williams, Richard N. – 1983
The literature of antonymy, though disjointed and inconclusive, has found that opposition is important to development, learning, psychological health, and creativity. To investigate the role of dialectics in cognitive processes and human learning, four empirical studies were undertaken. In study one, to investigate the dialectic process in…

Prawat, Richard S.; Gaines, Paul – Psychology in the Schools, 1974
Examines the usefulness of paired associative performance to assess for school learning proficiency by comparing a sample of learning-disabled (LD) youngsters to normals. Results indicate that the proportion of subjects in the normal and the LD groups who reported use of elaborative strategies compared to none laborative strategies does not differ…

McCain, Floyd, Jr.; Brown, Laurence D. – 1969
Forty-two college undergraduates, 28 women and 14 men, were classified as analytic, categorical, or relational according to their responses on the Sigel Cognitive Style Test and were randomly assigned to verbal or pictorial conditions. The subjects were presented a series of slides involving the paired association of 9 three-letter nonsense…

Teager, Joyce – 1969
Isolation of optimal instructional processes to provide information feedback and to motivate disadvantaged children was the goal of this comparative study of reinforcement contigencies. The subjects were 21 black children from 45 to 65 months of age. Children were ranked on the PPVT and a learning program pretest, then randomly assigned to three…

Raney, James L.; Thomson, William J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
Conjunctive (CJ), inclusive disjunctive (ID), and conditional (CD) concept conditions were compared with a paired-associate learning (PAL) condition using equivalent information tasks. (Author)

Richardson, Jack – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
The evidence from studies of component selection in paired-associate learning is reviewed and then considered in relation to Martin's (1968) hypothesis of encoding variability and Rudy's (1974) model of variations in the associative process. Component-selection tasks are also compared to verbal concept-formation tasks. (Editor)
