Roeser, Robert W.; Eccles, Jacquelynne S. – Developmental Psychology, 2015
Research on contemplative practices (e.g., mindfulness or compassion training) is growing rapidly in the clinical, health and neuro-sciences, but almost none of this research takes an explicitly developmental life span perspective. At present, we know rather little about the naturalistic development of mindfulness or compassion in children and…

Smollar, Jacqueline; Youniss, James – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1989
Examines connections between adolescents' perceptions of their relationships with their parents and the concept of individuation. Flick, Louise H.; McSweeney, Maryellen – 1985
The role of psychosocial immaturity in the behavior of adolescent mothers remains unexplained. This project explores the validity of Newberger's Parental Awareness (PA) model which outlines the development of parents' conceptions of their parental role. PA distinguishes parents reported to be abusive from non-abusive parents. This study tests the…

Laursen, Brett – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1993
Examined adolescents' perceptions of their daily conflicts in relationships with mothers, fathers, siblings, friends, romantic partners, and other peers and adults. Most adolescent conflicts were perceived as benign events with few positive or negative consequences for the relationship. Results suggest that adolescents recognize the fluidity and…

Alessandri, Steven M.; Wozniak, Robert H. – Child Development, 1989
Forty-two families with children in transition to early and mid-adolescence were interviewed in a follow-up study of parent-child agreement in beliefs concerning the child, and of children's awareness of parental beliefs. Results indicate increases in accuracy of prediction of parental beliefs by children between the ages of 10 and 13. (RJC)

Smetana, Judith G. – New Directions for Child Development, 1991
Used vignettes and self-reports to examine adolescents' and mothers' reasoning about family conflicts. Found that mothers and adolescents differentially evaluated reasons for parental requests and adolescent noncompliance. They also differed in their judgments of the likelihood of particular justifications succeeding or leading to conflict. (BC)

Simons, Kevin J.; Paternite, Carl E.; Shore, Cecilia – Journal of Early Adolescence, 2001
Examined association between adolescents' perception of parent-adolescent attachment quality and adolescent aggression, as mediated by social cognition and self-esteem. Found that higher social cognition was associated with lower self-reported aggression when parent-adolescent attachments and adolescent self-esteem were controlled. When…

Fletcher, Anne C.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1995
High school students completed achievement, psychosocial competence, behavior problems, and internalized stress. Results showed that the level of parent authoritativeness in adolescents' peer network benefits adolescents above and beyond the positive impact of parenting in their home. (ET)

Green, L. B.; Hubbard, Joan P. – Adolescence, 1982
Contends that adolescents experience a "minority psychology" that motivates much of their behavior and that the extent to which this minority psychology will or will not lead to pathological thought and behavior can be influenced by the equanimity and rationality maintained by meaningful adults. (Author)

Niemi, Paivi M. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1988
The relationship between family interaction and formation of family-life conceptions in adolescence was studied with 26 male and 27 female 15-year-old ninth graders and their parents (n=71), using an interactional framework. The effects of open, constructive family communications and expression of marital conflicts were assessed via interviews and…

Holmbeck, Grayson N.; O'Donnell, Kim – New Directions for Child Development, 1991
Examined discrepancies in mothers' and adolescents' perceptions of decision making and behavioral autonomy. Discrepancies in decision-making judgments led to a high level of conflict. Discrepancies between adolescents' desire for and mothers' granting of autonomy led to a high conflict level and adolescent adjustment difficulties. (BC)

Developmental Implications of Shared versus Distinct Perceptions of the Family in Early Adolescence.

Carlson, Cindy I.; And Others – New Directions for Child Development, 1991
