Proctor, Robert W. – Psychological Review, 1986
Ratcliff (1985) simulated data from three letter-matching experiments with his diffusion model. The necessity of including a comparison criterion is consistent with the conclusion of Proctor, Rao, and Hurst (1984) that bias of response criteria, alone, is insufficient to generate the fast-same phenomenon. Summers, Walter Van; Horton, David L. – 1984
This study investigates the influence on sentence encoding of activating appropriate contextual knowledge. A group of 72 undergraduate students randomly assigned to four treatment groups read and were later asked to recognize sentences from a passage. In one group, subjects were told nothing about the passage from which the sentence was taken. In…

Enns, James T. – Developmental Psychology, 1987
Measured the pattern goodness effect at visual encoding stages and short term memory stages in observers aged 6 to 22 years using a speeded sequential same-different paradigm. Found goodness effects were larger in short term memory for all subjects, memory effects decreased with age, and encoding effects remained constant. (SKC)

Kosslyn, Stephen M. – 1985
Visual recognition, navigation, tracking, and imagery are posited to involve some of the same types of representations and processes. The first part of this paper develops a theory of some of the shared types of representations and processing modules. The theory is developed in light of neurophysiological and neuroanatomical data from non-human…

Marzano, Robert J. – 1985
This paper presents an instructional model for thinking skills and discusses implementing the model. Based on a unitary theory of human cognition and some basic assumptions about the conditions for successfully intervening in public education, the model can be implemented at any grade level within any instructional framework. Currently used models…

Foley, Mary Ann; Foley, Hugh J. – 1985
Two criteria for the automatic encoding of learning, instructional manipulation, and stimulus characteristics were studied in subjects who judged the frequency of occurrence of words, letters, and nonwords. In Experiment 1, six word lists were constructed with varying frequency of alphabet letters. A variety of instructions were presented (whether…
