An active and successful peer advising program in a college setting is discussed. The assumption was that new students needed the support and advice of experienced counselors to help them develop academic competence, and upper-division students could provide that support. (MLW)

An advising center staffed by residence hall coordinators at the University of Northern Iowa is described. Major factors for success are identified: awareness of perceptions that facilitate or inhibit establishment of advisory roles, definition of responsibilities, and definition of how advisors relate to other resources. The heart of advising is the faculty: faculty care about students, design major requirements and course content, communicate the rationale for required courses, help students see alternatives in courses of study, and provide them with options. The College of St. Catherine's Weekend College program offers students the opportunity to earn a college degree by attending classes every other weekend from early September through June. In an Alabama program for highly motivated students, contract advising helps students set goals, plan academic schedules, and seek out members of their advising committees.
