Vangkilde, Signe; Coull, Jennifer T.; Bundesen, Claus – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2012
In a crowded dynamic world, temporal expectations guide our attention in time. Prior investigations have consistently demonstrated that temporal expectations speed motor behavior. We explore effects of temporal expectation on "perceptual" speed in three nonspeeded, cued recognition paradigms. Different hazard rate functions for the…

Hicks, Robert E.; And Others – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
120 college students sorted cards with instructions to process bits of information per card (response uncertainty) and then made an absolute judgment of the interval's duration. Judged time was an inverse linear function of response uncertainty under the prospective paradigm, whereas no significant function was obtained under the retrospective…

Smith, Edward E.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1976
There is a conflict in the literature on selective attention. Five experiments were conducted to resolve this conflict, and all involved a comparison of tachistoscopic recognition when alternatives were either presented beforehand or not. (Editor/RK)

Fischhoff, Baruch – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
There are many tasks in which people are called on to disregard information that they have already processed. Dealing with inadmissible evidence in a courtroom setting, second-guessing the past, etc. This research investigates such difficulties in a general form, using almanac-type questions. (Editor/RK)

Massaro, Dominic W. – Psychological Review, 1972
Article introduces a framework for the recognition stage of auditory information processing. (Author/ML)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Cognitive Processes, Comprehension, Eidetic Imagery
Druker, Joseph F. – 1968
The role of perceptual discrimination in the development of the ability to selectively process information was investigated. Using an incidental learning paradigm, the discriminability between relevant and irrelevant stimuli was experimentally varied in two ways: (1) contiguity versus non-contiguity in spatial arrangements and (2) alternating…

Halford, Graeme S. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1980
Four groups of children (N=80; C.A. 6.6. to 12.5; M.A. 7.9 to 14.7) were tested for ability to reproduce five-element two- and three-dimensional patterns. Significant interaction and main effects were found. Three-dimensional pattern performance increased with age; all ages performed well on two-dimensional patterns. (Author/DB)

Green, Bert F. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1988
Emerging areas and critical problems related to computer-based testing are identified. Topics covered include adaptive testing; calibration; item selection; multidimensional items; uses of information processing theory; relation to cognitive psychology; and tests of short-term and spatial memory, perceptual speed and accuracy, and movement…
