Bird, Zachary; Chase, Philip N. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2021
Previous research has shown that many students procrastinate, but wish that they did not do so. The current study replicated research that compared distribution of studying under contingent access to study materials and noncontingent access to study materials in a graduate-level course (Perrin et al., 2011). It extended Perrin et al. (2011) in…

Weeks, Marian; Gaylord-Ross, Robert – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1981
The influence of task difficulty on aberrant behavior was investigated with three severely handicapped students (10, 13, and 15 years old). Noticeably higher rates of problem behavior occurred in demand compared to no demand conditions. In addition, there were higher rates of problem behaviors on difficult versus easy tasks. (Author)

Charlop, Marjorie H.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
Three experiments assessed the efficacy of various reinforcers to increase correct task responding in a total of 10 autistic children, aged 6-9. Of the reinforcers used (stereotypy, delayed echolalia, perseverative behavior, and food), task performance was highest with opportunities to engage in aberrant behaviors, and lowest with edible…

Parsons, Marsha B.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The work preferences of four adults with severe handicaps were assessed, and three choice-related situations were presented. The study found that clients attended to work tasks almost twice as much when they chose their tasks and when assigned to work on preferred tasks, versus when assigned to work on nonpreferred tasks. Lattal, Kennon A.; Neef, Nancy A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1996
Recent experiments are reviewed in three areas of research concerning reinforcement schedules: (1) behavioral history effects on schedule performance; (2) the role of instructions in schedule performance of humans; and (3) dynamic schedules of reinforcement. The paper concludes by identifying some general issues concerning reinforcement schedules…

Koegel, Robert L.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1980
The study investigated the influence of intertrial interval duration on the performance of three autistic children (ages 2 to 12) during teaching situations. The results showed that the short intertrial intervals always produced higher levels of correct responding than the long intervals. (Author/PHR)

O'Reilly, Mark F.; Carey, Yvonne – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1996
Two classroom conditions (classroom demand and classroom attention) were systematically manipulated to explore their effects on performance under analogue assessments for a girl (age 7) with severe intellectual disabilities who exhibited aggressive behavior. Results demonstrated higher levels of aggression during demand analogue conditions when…

Osborne, Kurt; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The study investigated the effectiveness of using visual cues to highlight the seams of baseballs, to improve the hitting of curveballs by five undergraduate varsity baseball team candidates. Results indicated that subjects hit a greater percentage of marked than unmarked balls. (Author/DB)

Vollmer, Timothy R.; Iwata, Brian A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
Five adult males with profound retardation were assessed on a motor task during baseline, satiation, and deprivation conditions, with three classes of consequences: small food items, music, and social praise. Each stimulus class functioned as reinforcement, with different degrees of effectiveness during satiation versus deprivation conditions.…

Lerman, Dorthea C.; Iwata, Brian A.; Rainville, Beth; Adelinis, John D.; Crosland, Kimberly; Kogan, Jeffrey – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1997
The effects of reinforcement choice on task performance were examined with six individuals (ages 6-39) who had been diagnosed with severe to profound mental retardation. Findings indicated that access to choice did not improve the task performance of the subjects when highly preferred items were already incorporated into instructional programs.…

McEntee, Julie E.; Saunders, Richard R. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1997
The behavior of four adolescents with severe or profound mental retardation was evaluated in the presence of four sets of materials during periods of unstructured leisure activity. Results indicate that the participants allocated their time principally to stereotypic behavior with materials when the number of sets of materials available was…

Alavosius, Mark P.; Sulzer-Azaroff, Beth – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The performance of four direct service providers in feeding, positioning, and transferring physically disabled patients was measured. Use of written instructions led to slight and usually brief changes in performance. The introduction of feedback, especially a continuous schedule, resulted in marked improvements which were maintained. (Author/JDD)

Cuvo, Anthony J.; Lerch, Laura J.; Leurquin, Deborah A.; Gaffaney, Thomas J.; Poppen, Roger L. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
Experiments examined the effect of work requirements in combination with reinforcement schedules on the choice behavior of six adults with mental retardation and seven typical preschoolers. Results showed that participants' responding was largely controlled by the reinforcement received for responding to each level of work. (Author/CR)
