Compared three personality theories (ego development, moral development, and conceptual systems theory) in 102 college students who completed the Sentence Completion Test, This I Believe Test, and Defining Issues Test. To assess adolescent egocentrism-sociocentrism, an instrument was devised to measure Elkind's constructs (the imaginary audience, the personal fable, and general self-absorption), plus nonsocial focuses and political focuses. The developmental, defensive, and role-playing theories of parental identification were tested on high school seniors. Studied the extent to which the unique and typical behaviors of adolescent egocentrism are manifested by the adolescent characters in Kerr's novels. Analysis shows at least one of the egocentrism characteristics is present in each character. Because Kerr's characters are realistic they provide helpful models for adolescents and adults. (JAC)
