Theoretical formulations of D. Gutmann in 1965 and of D. Bakan in 1966 were tested in three studies of sex differences in personality. In an experiment designed to determine the role of body part attitudes in self-concept, females demonstrated greater knowledge of their inner body and attached greater importance to their body parts than did males. The present study addressed the question of whether persons' implicit personality theories include the notion that the possession of masculine and feminine characteristics tend to preclude each other so that the two clusters of attributes are perceived to be negatively correlated.
