Volkert, Valerie M.; Vaz, Petula C. M.; Piazza, Cathleen C.; Frese, Jana; Barnett, Lara – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2011
We evaluated the effects of redistribution and swallow facilitation with a flipped spoon on packing in 2 children with a feeding disorder. For both participants, packing decreased when we implemented the flipped spoon treatment package. Mechanisms responsible for behavior change and areas of future research are discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)

Nabeyama, Bobby; Sturmey, Peter – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2010
The study analyzed the effects of self-recording and behavioral skills training on guarding responses of 3 staff members while they assisted 3 students with multiple disabilities to ambulate. The intervention increased the percentage of correct posture and guarding responses and the distance that students ambulated. These effects generalized when…

Roane, Henry S.; Kelley, Michael E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2008
In the current investigation, a functional analysis suggested that positive reinforcement in the form of physical contact maintained the self-injurious behavior of a girl with developmental and physical disabilities. We used the information obtained from the functional analysis to develop a treatment for noncompliance with walking in which a…

Coleman-Martin, Mari Beth; Heller, Kathryn Wolff – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2004
Current research suggests that constant delay is an effective means of teaching students through near-errorless learning. The current study examined how procedures used in previous research may be modified so that constant delay can be implemented with students who have physical disabilities that prevent them from engaging in fluent academic…

Cope, John G.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
This study of illegal parking in spaces reserved for the physically disabled found that the lowest rate (27 percent of 78 vehicles) occurred with ground markings, vertical signs, and a sign that concerned citizens were watching the spaces. Illegal parking increased to 34 percent when message signs were removed, and 65 percent when vertical signs…

Dowrick, Peter W.; Dove, Cynthia – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1980
The use of edited videotape replay (which showed only "positive" behaviors) to improve the water skills of three spina bifida children (ages 5 to 10) was examined. A multiple baseline across Ss design was used, and behavioral changes were observed to occur in close association with intervention. One child was given successive…

Alavosius, Mark P.; Sulzer-Azaroff, Beth – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The performance of four direct service providers in feeding, positioning, and transferring physically disabled patients was measured. Use of written instructions led to slight and usually brief changes in performance. The introduction of feedback, especially a continuous schedule, resulted in marked improvements which were maintained. (Author/JDD)

Thompson, George A., Jr. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1979
The behavior modification procedure, carried out at mealtime with a ten-year-old retarded boy who had spastic cerebral palsy, consisted of differential reinforcement and punishment, and resulted in substantial decreases in tongue thrust (reverse swallowing) and food expulsion, and a large increase in observed chewing. (Author/DLS)

Alavosius, Mark P.; Sulzer-Azaroff, Beth – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1986
Individual written and verbal performance feedback was examined to determine its influence on the safety with which physically disabled clients were transferred. Two client-transfer techniques were task analyzed and six direct service providers' on-the-job performance was measured weekly. Feedback was consistently followed by improvements in safe…

Mudford, Oliver C.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The representativeness of behavioral observation samples with durations of less than the whole time of interest was investigated with five profoundly mentally retarded physically handicapped adults in an institutional setting. It was found that the session representativeness was a function of the relative duration of the behavioral categories and…

Cope, John G.; Allred, Linda J. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
Illegal parking in spaces reserved for people with physical disabilities was examined across three conditions: a vertical sign alone or in combination with a message sign announcing public surveillance or a message device dispensing reminder notes and announcing community involvement. Messages increasing expectation of negative social consequences…
