Teaching Science to Biblical Literalists
Saperstein, Alvin M.
Academe, v93 n1 p43-45 Jan-Feb 2007
In this essay, the author discusses teaching science without alienating his students whom he refers to as "biblical literalists." He presents two examples of his teaching experience where he was confronted by some of his biblical-literalist students. The problem he is raising is not one of religion versus science. It is that of the biblical literalist versus science. It is the reliance on a religious faithbased text as a source of natural or human history rather than as a metaphorical guide to "the good life," it is the use of the Bible as a "science book."
