Gaar, Kermit A., Jr. – Physiologist, 1983
Describes a computer program allowing students to study such circulatory variables as venus return, cardiac output, mean circulatory filling pressure, resistance to venous return, and equilibrium point. Documentation for this Applesoft program (or diskette) is available from author. (JM)
Descriptors: Blood Circulation, Cardiovascular System, College Science, Computer Programs
Wagner, Peter D. – Physiologist, 1977
Outlines methods for manipulating multiple gas data so as to gain the greatest amount of insight into the properties of ventilation-perfusion distributions. Refers to data corresponding to normal and abnormal lungs. Uses a two-dimensional framework with the respiratory gases of oxygen and carbon dioxide. (CS)
Descriptors: Biology, Human Body, Medicine, Physiology
Physiologist, 1978
Presents the schedule of American Physiological Society (APS) sponsored and cosponsored symposia to be held at the Spring 1978 APS meeting. There are twenty-two symposia scheduled over a four-day period. (BB)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Conferences, Physiology
Physiologist, 1976
Presented are eight abstracts of a symposium held in conjunction with the American Physiological Society (APS) and the American Society of Zoologists (ASZ). Fish gill structure and function, renal function, acid-base balance and ionic sensitivity are topics discussed. (EB)
Descriptors: Abstracts, Biochemistry, Medicine, Metabolism
Valtin, Heinz – Physiologist, 1980
Describes some of the elements that the author deliberately incorporated in his writing of textbooks. Two categories are discussed: some general guiding principles, and more minor technical features. (CS)
Descriptors: Physiology, Science Education, Technical Writing, Textbook Preparation
Donald, David E. – Physiologist, 1979
Presents data on release of renin during direct and indirect stimulation of renal nerves. Conclusions show that renin release is influenced by change in activity of carotid and cardiopulmonary baroreceptor systems, and excitation of discrete areas of brain and hypothalamus by changes in renal sympathetic nerve. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Investigations, Laboratory Experiments, Physiology, Science Experiments
Smith, Charlene – Physiologist, 1995
Presents the results of an annual survey of Physiology Departments (n=101) that elicited information about faculty salary, overall department budgets, and space allocations for research. Data is displayed using extensive charts and graphs. (DDR)
Descriptors: Budgets, Higher Education, Needs Assessment, Physiology
Physiologist, 1976
Presented are abstracts of papers arranged in alphabetical order by first-named author. The proceedings of the American Physiological Society were held jointly with the American Society of Zoologists (ASZ) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). (EB)
Descriptors: Abstracts, Biochemistry, Medical Education, Medicine
Permeant Ions, Impermeant Ions, Electrogenic Pumps, Cell Volume, and the Resting Membrane Potential.
Edwards, Charles – Physiologist, 1982
Students often have difficulty in understanding the processes responsible for the ionic basis of the membrane potential. Because descriptions in textbooks are not satisfactory and in some cases in error, a discussion of the processes underlying the potential (combining known results) is provided. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Biology, College Science, Cytology
Bruce, David S.; Speck, Dexter F. – Physiologist, 1979
This report details several simulated divinq experiments on the human. These are suitable for undergraduate or graduate laboratories in human or environmental physiology. The experiment demonstrates that a diving reflex is precipitated by both facial cooling and apnea. (Author/RE)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Instruction, Laboratory Procedures, Laboratory Techniques
Forrester, Tom – Physiologist, 1979
A review of experiments which demonstrate the release of ATP from skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and active brain tissue. Effects of exogenously applied ATP to brain tissue are discussed in relation to whole body exercise. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Biology, Human Body, Laboratory Experiments, Metabolism
Physiologist, 1979
This issue presents 821 abstracts of research in physiology. Ten abstracts resulting from mini-seminars presented by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are also given. (SA)
Descriptors: Abstracts, Conference Reports, Medical Research, Physiology
Physiologist, 1979
Presents a booklist of comprehensive and specialty textbooks in physiology. The list was compiled from a survey of 127 departments of physiology in medical and veterinary schools in the United States and Canada. The usual bibliographic information is provided. (MA)
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Higher Education, Medical Education, Physiology
Physiologist, 1978
Presents the results of the annual survey of The Association of Chairmen of Departments of Physiology (ACDP) membership. Questionnaire topics include academic positions, faculty statistics, budgets, salaries and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. (MA)
Descriptors: Educational Assessment, Higher Education, Physiology, Questionnaires
Jones, M. E.; And Others – Physiologist, 1985
Exchange of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) material between institutions is often impeded by incompatabilities of hardware, software, and curriculum. The use of a driver program is suggested to resolve these problems and facilitate exchange of instructional material. Technical details of the program described (and lessons used) are available…
