Danner, Fred W.; Taylor, Arthur M. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1973
Examines the hypothesis that first, third, and sixth graders' recall of noun triplets would be facilitated by using (1) related pictures of nouns, (2) training in imagining relations between separate pictures of nouns, and (3) a combination of these two processes. (DP)

Hale, Gordon A.; Piper, Richard A. – 1973
Evidence regarding children's incidental learning has been derived largely from tasks in which the incidental stimulus features have been independent of the task-relevant information. The present study examined children's incidental learning with compound pictorial stimuli under conditions in which the relevant and incidental features were: (a)…

Levin, Joel R.; Pressley, Michael – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Kindergarten children were administered a paired-associate learning task at the beginning and end of the school-year, under either regular (control) or self-generated visual imagery instructions. Age predicted performance in the imagery but not in the control condition. Results supported the developmental imagery hypothesis. (Author/RD)

Wagner, Martha; Johnson, Janet W. – 1975
This study explored the developmental changes in children's effective utilization of verbal versus pictorial stimuli in forming connections between stimulus and response elements in a paired-associate task. A total of 112 children (56 males and 56 females), half of them 4-year-olds and half 8-year-olds, were tested under eight conditions involving…

Ackerman, Brian P. – 1978
This study investigates the role of labeling in developmental increases in picture recall. In two experiments, the memory for pictorial paired-associates of first graders or second graders, fourth graders and adults was evaluated by means of a study-test cued recall procedure. In Experiment 1, the stimulus presentation duration (on-time) and the…

Bate, Gwen M.; Pate, James L. – 1975
This study investigated the relative effectiveness of verbal and visual modes of presentation on the learning of paired-associates by 64 3-year-old and 64 8-year-old children. Nine pictorial paired-associates and 9 verbal paired-associates were formed from pictures or names of familiar objects. At each age level, 8 male and 8 female subjects were…
