Madigan, Stephen; And Others – Canadian Journal of Psychology, 1972
Descriptors: Imagination, Memory, Paired Associate Learning, Pictorial Stimuli
Kerst, Stephen Marshall – 1974
The purposes of this study were to determine if test stimulus was a member of the memory set and if items in an interactive image held in short term memory (STM) could be scanned simultaneously. In experiment one, 50 university subjects compared a test word with a set of one to three words held in STM. The rate of STM search was obtained by…

Levin, Joel R.; Kaplan, Sandra A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1972
Findings were that imagery instructions for picture pairs were generally more facilitative than imagery instructions for word pairs, with children at this age exhibiting little variability in their capacity to utilize a visual imagery strategy when pictures comprised the learning materials. Clarkson, Thomas A.; And Others – Child Development, 1973
Study investigated performance under the conditions of: presentation of noninteracting picture pairs, presentation of interacting picture pairs, and presentation of noninteracting picture pairs with instructions to create interacting images. (Authros/CB)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Grade 4, Grade 6, Imagery

Levin, Joel R.; Pressley, Michael – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Kindergarten children were administered a paired-associate learning task at the beginning and end of the school-year, under either regular (control) or self-generated visual imagery instructions. Age predicted performance in the imagery but not in the control condition. Results supported the developmental imagery hypothesis. (Author/RD)

Hall, Donald M., Hughes, Jan N. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1984
A paired-associate memory task with pictures and words as items was used to categorize fourth graders into four learner types (high/low picture x high/low word performance). Poor paired-associate learners profited more than did good paired-associate learners from picture aids on the prose task. (Author/BW)

Purdy, Jesse E.; Luepnitz, Roy R. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Sixty-four subjects were presented pictures and later asked to draw them or provide one-word descriptions to test the hypothesis that decreased retention effectiveness occurs because images stored in long-term memory are accessible only through their verbal labels. Recall of pictures was significantly greater than recall of words. (Author/PN)

Wagner, Martha; Johnson, Janet W. – 1975
This study explored the developmental changes in children's effective utilization of verbal versus pictorial stimuli in forming connections between stimulus and response elements in a paired-associate task. A total of 112 children (56 males and 56 females), half of them 4-year-olds and half 8-year-olds, were tested under eight conditions involving…
