Using a two-year time series, the impact on law enforcement pursuit behavior of two changes in pursuit policy in a police department was studied using the ARIMA computer program and Tobit analysis. Each policy change produced significant reductions in pursuits engaged in by police officers. (SLD)

Research into the police function, suggests that the emphasis on crime-related activities has failed to achieve crime reduction goals and may have exacerbated problems of police-citizen alienation and citizen fear of crime. Drawing upon results of interviews with 522 policemen in the black ghettos of 13 major cities in Spring, 1958, the authors speculate that by far most" of the white policeman's perception of black hostility is a projection of his own fears and prejudices, not legitimate reaction to actual hostility.
