The Role of Education in "The Public and its Problems": A Deweyan Perspective on Political Literacy
Charles L. Lowery
Education and Culture, v39 n1 p3-34 2023
The assault on democratic values is not new--nor is the effort to promote the critical literacy skills necessary to understand the cultural, economic, moral, and social issues that underline these social concerns. Unfortunately, in modern society we have conflated an associated way of living with government, and government with politics, and politics with partisanship. Noticeably, this confusion has concealed our willingness or perhaps even our ability to envision the meaning of community. In this essay, I adopt a Deweyan perspective to examine how school leaders might integrate political literacy to counter obstacles to democratic education.
