ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between vocational/ technical education (VTE) and economic growth in Nigerian. This purpose is motivated by the consideration that human capital development through enrolment in vocational and technical education is expected to stimulate economic growth. Quantitative correlational research design was adopted for the study. The data source was secondary in nature, which was retrieved from the archives of the following agencies: World Bank, Nigeria Ministry of Education, Nigerian National Bureau of Statistic and Central bank of Nigeria. Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the effects and the perceived relationship that existed between vocational-technical education (VTE), education spending, and economic growth, based on endogenous growth theory. As part of the study findings, the study revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between enrolment in vocation enterprise institutions, polytechnics, college of agriculture, and health sciences (i.e. vocational & technical education) and economic growth in Nigeria. Therefore, the study rejected the null hypothesis (H[subscript 0]), and accepted the alternative hypothesis (H[subscript 1]). It was further revealed that about 93% variations in the economic growth in Nigeria from the period between 1991 and 2022, could be attributed to the variations in the following variables: Population Growth Rate, Inflation Rate, Education Expenditure as a share of GDP, Enrollment in Colleges of Health Science, Enrollment in Colleges of Agriculture, and Enrollment in Polytechnic.
