Strengthening Our Knowledge Advantage: Submission to the Budget 2019 Consultations
Canadian Association of University Teachers
The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) is the national voice for academic staff. CAUT represents more than 70,000 teachers, librarians, researchers, general staff and other academic professionals in 122 post-secondary institutions across the country. CAUT works actively in the public interest to improve the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada. CAUT fights for fair working conditions, compensation and benefits that foster quality teaching and innovative research while advancing equity and human rights within the profession. CAUT welcomed the opportunity to participate in the 2019 Federal Budget consultations, and made the following recommendations: (1) Development and funding of a national strategy for post-secondary education, to ensure Canada's universities and colleges can fulfill their mission to provide high quality education, produce important scholarship and research, and serve their communities; (2) Investment in early career researchers and faculty renewal; and (3) Recognition of the inherent and Treaty rights of Indigenous peoples to education and substantially increase federal support for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students.
