O'Neil, James M.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1978
Assessed predictability of Holland's Investigative personality--Self-Directed Search (SDS)--and three consistency levels over seven-year period. Results indicated that for Investigative-type males, SDS has moderately high efficiency in predicting actual job entry, graduate major, and ideal and projected career plans. Differential predictability of…

Holland, John L.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1975
The validity of some theoretically derived vocational diagnostic signs was examined to learn if a person's self-knowledge, occupational knowledge, and decision-making ability were predictable. The positive results imply some practical applications and the need for further theoretical investigation. (Author)

Healy, Charles C.; Mourton, Don L. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1984
Tested whether scores on the Self Directed Search relate to career development needs in a study of 138 college students. Findings showed the scores related differentially in ways predicted by Holland (1973) and supported probing whether college students earning low investigative scores were behind in their career development. (JAC)

Haase, Richard F.; And Others – 1979
Discriminant analysis of Holland's Self Directed Search and Vocational Preference Inventory significantly improved the predictive validity of his classification scheme, over the traditional method of assigning high point codes. These results were obtained with both an initial and a replication sample of undergraduates pursuing various degrees. The…

O'Neil, James M.; Magoon, Thomas M. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1977
A sample of male Investigative subjects (N=171) who completed the SDS as freshmen in 1970 was sent a questionnaire four years later. Results indicated that, for Investigative-type freshman males, the SDS has moderately high efficiency in predicting, four years later, their ultimate major and their immediate and future vocational plans. Johnson, John A.; Hogan, Robert – Personnel Psychology, 1981
Vocational scales other than those describing the occupational group in question may often predict job performance. A case is reported using Holland's Self Directed Search and two groups of policemen. Scores on the Artistic and Conventional scales consistently predict effective performance as a patrolman. (Author)

McGowan, Andrew S. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1982
Investigated the predictive efficiency of Holland's Self-Directed Search. In 1974, 126 vocationally undecided high school seniors were asked to express a career choice or indecision. A 1978 survey showed only 27 percent chose a career area not predicted by their 1974 SDS results. (Author)

Rowe, Fred A.; Smith, Nancy M. – College and University, 1990
The Work Values Inventory and Self-Directed Search were used to predict retention of students in office occupation majors at Utah Valley Community College. The predictive model distinguished among students either retained (graduated, on-track, and "jobbed-out") and noncompleters. Noncompletion was correctly predicted for about 73 percent…

O'Neil, James M.; And Others – 1980
Concern on how interest inventories are being used in career counseling and other preventive interventions has resulted in heightened sensitivity to the impact of interest inventories and the emergence of the concept exploration validity. Various aspects of exploration validity were assessed using three different interest inventories. The…

Holland, John L.; Gottfredson, Gary D. – 1974
The psychological meaning and predictive value of a person's vocational aspirations were examined by applying Holland's typology to the vocational aspirations of high school juniors (N=1,005), college juniors (N=692), employed adults (N=140), and a second sample of college students studied over a 1 year interval (N=624). The aspirational data were…

Holland, John L.; And Others – 1973
The validity of some theoretically-derived vocational diagnostic signs was examined to learn if a person's self-knowledge, occupational knowledge, and decision-making ability were predictable. Diverse samples of high school juniors (N = 1005), college juniors (N = 692), and employed adults (N = 140) were administered the Self-Directed Search (the…
