Weckbacher, Lisa Marie; Okamoto, Yukari – Journal of Education and Learning, 2018
There is a consensus that certain cognitive abilities and mathematics performance are related. This link also extends to geometry. Surprisingly, however, little research has examined specific aspects of cognition that may contribute to successful performance in geometry, particularly at the secondary level. In this study, we explored in what ways,…

Kelsey E. Schenck; Doy Kim; Fangli Xia; Michael I. Swart; Candace Walkington; Mitchell J. Nathan – Grantee Submission, 2024
Access to body-based resources has been shown to augment cognitive processes, but not all movements equally aid reasoning. Interactive technologies, like dynamic geometry systems (DGS), potentially amplify the link between movement and geometric representation, thereby deepening students' understanding of geometric properties. This study…

Kösa, Temel – Educational Research and Reviews, 2016
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using dynamic geometry software on preservice mathematics teachers' spatial visualization skills and to determine whether spatial visualization skills can be a predictor of success in learning analytic geometry of space. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a control group.…

Harootunian, Alen – ProQuest LLC, 2012
In this study, relationships were examined between students' perception of their cognition, behavior, environment, and motivation. The purpose of the research study was to explore the extent to which 9th and 10th grade students' perception of environment, cognition, and behavior can predict their motivation in Algebra and Geometry courses. A…

Delgado, Ana R.; Prieto, Gerardo – Intelligence, 2004
Sex-related differential studies on mathematical abilities have hardly taken into account the mediator role of the verbal factor, which contrasts with the interest shown in the mediator role of visuospatial aptitude. We predicted that if sex-related differences were found, mental rotation would mediate mathematical abilities typically favoring…

Sowder, Larry – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1974
Reports discriminate analyses using data from several National Longitudinal Study of Mathematical Abilities (NLSMA) measures for two groups from the NLSMA Y-population, high and low geometry achievers. The analysis correctly classified from 75 percent to 95 percent of the groups, depending on the measure used. (JP)

Pedro, Joan Daniels; And Others – American Educational Research Journal, 1981
Attitudinal and attributional variables relating to the election of mathematics courses by females and males are identified. A small set of variables explaining the variance in female and male mathematical plans was found. These results may help in understanding why larger proportions of males than females elect mathematics. (Author/GK)
