The Role of Social Support on Stress and Depression in College Students
Erica Doldier
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
College students experience a lot of stress during their academic career. Chronic stress can lead to an elevated risk of depression. Untreated depression in college students can lead to negative impacts on the student's academic performance and reduce the student's quality of life (Deng et al., 2022). Positive social support has been shown to increase the chance of resilience to stress, help protect against trauma-related psychopathology, decrease symptoms of trauma-induced disorders, and reduce medical morbidity (Ozbay et al., 2007). College students do not receive a lot of social support so this study is examining whether depression and stress in college students can be influenced by the amount of social support that is available, such as support from friends, family, significant others, and university support. In order to determine whether social support is a meaningful predictor of stress and depression outcomes, both Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression analyses were used. The results will provide insight for academic institutions to incorporate more social support programs to improve college students' experiences of stress and depression.
