Huberty, Carl J. – 1971
This study was concerned with various schemes for reducing the number of variables in a multivariate analysis. Two sets of illustrative data were used; the numbers of criterion groups were 3 and 5. The proportion of correct classifications was employed as an index of discriminatory power of each subset of variables selected. Of the four procedures…

Robbins, Jerry H.; Evans, Alan W., Jr. – 1972
To predict the educational quality of programs in 150 school districts, this study used 34 predictor variables in a multiple regression analysis. Dependent variables used to represent educational quality in a district were (1) the percent of rejections by the local Selective Service Boards for mental reasons, (2) the percent of elementary and…

Hom, Willard – 2000
This study used 1994 data from the California Community College System cohort of first-time freshmen to identify that part of University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) transfer performance that is determined by factors outside the control of college administrators. The idea was to "level the playing field" when…

Liu, Richard – College Student Journal, 1981
Discusses multiple regression, a very popular statistical technique in the field of education. One of the basic assumptions in regression analysis requires that independent variables in the equation should not be highly correlated. The problem of multicollinearity and some of the solutions to it are discussed. (Author)

Thorlindsson, Thorolfur; Bjornsson, Sigurjon – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1979
Using data on 1,438 Reykjavik children, this paper analyzes the influence of social origins, family characteristics, and IQ on scholastic performance in sixth, eighth, and ninth grades. Although IQ is the best single predictor of scholastic performance, both social structural and social psychological antecedents proved important. (Author/SJL)

Friedman, Charles P.; Bakewell, William E., Jr. – Journal of Medical Education, 1980
The ability of the new Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to predict performance of first-year medical students at the University of North Carolina was studied. Its incremental validity, determined by computing the additional variance in performance explainable by the MCAT after the effects of other admissions variables were taken into account,…

Gauthier, William J., Jr.; Yaworth, Joseph S. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Winne and Walsh's Reanalysis (EJ 229 157) of Gauthier and Yarworth's study of self-concept and participation in high school activities (EJ 189 606) is addressed, particularly with respect to the statistical techniques used. The intentions of the original article are also clarified. (GDC)

Glenn, Norval D.; Weaver, Charles N. – Public Opinion Quarterly, 1981
Examines the effects of years of school completed on eight dimensions of psychological well-being. Notes a statistically significant negative effect for White males' community satisfaction, and some evidence that education has positive effects on psychological well-being in all subpopulations except Black men. (Author/RL)

Wolfe, Lee M. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
The inclusion of unmeasured variables in path analyses in educational research is discussed. The statistical basis for inclusion is presented, along with several examples. (JKS)

Lowenthal, Werner; Wergin, Jon F. – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 1979
The extent to which the Pharmacy College Admissions Test and other admissions criteria predict (1) academic performance during later years at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, and (2) scores on the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Licensing Examination (NABPLEX), and a board of pharmacy law examination are assessed.…

Zientek, Linda Reichwein; Thompson, Bruce – Journal of Early Intervention, 2006
In early intervention, researchers often are interested in interpretation aids that can help determine the relative importance of variables when multiple regression models are used, and that facilitate deeper insight into prediction dynamics. Commonality analysis is one approach for helping researchers understand the contributions independent or…

Trentacosta, Christopher J.; Izard, Carroll E.; Mostow, Allison J.; Fine, Sarah E. – School Psychology Quarterly, 2006
The current study examined the relations between two aspects of emotional competence--emotion knowledge and emotion expression, and children's attentional competence during one school year. Participants were 263 first- and second-grade students at two rural elementary schools. A multiple regression analysis showed that emotion knowledge predicted…

Cafri, Guy; van den Berg, Patricia; Thompson, J. Kevin – Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, 2006
Adolescent boys (n = 269) were assessed for levels of several risky behaviors related to the pursuit of muscularity, including substance use (anabolic steroids, prohormones, and ephedrine) dieting to gain weight, and symptoms of muscle dysmorphia (MD). The association between these behaviors and a variety of putative biological, psychological, and…
