What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Peer reviewedStevenson, Harold W.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1976
Teachers' ratings of children's academic abilities, classroom skills, and personal-social characteristics were highly predictive of subsequent school achievement. Although teachers tended to be more positive toward girls, within each sex ratings were predictive of future performance. Teacher ratings were more predictive of scholastic success than…

Peer reviewedPerrin, David W.; Whitney, Douglas R. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1976
The gains in accuracy resulting from applying any of the smoothing methods appear sufficient to justify the suggestion that all expectancy tables used by colleges for admission, guidance, or planning purposes should be smoothed. These methods on the average, reduce the criterion measure (an index of inaccuracy) by 30 percent. (Author/MV)

Peer reviewedSharon, Amiel T. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
Results of this study indicate that an English proficiency test such as TOEFL may raise the validity of the GRE aptitude tests in predicting foreign students' graduate school GPA. (Author)
Descriptors: Aptitude Tests, English (Second Language), Foreign Students, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedHolly, Keith A.; Michael, William B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
On the basis of the findings it would appear that mathematics instructors should consider seriously the use of Structure-of-Intellect factor tests for selection and placement of students. (Authors)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Algebra, Criterion Referenced Tests, Factor Structure
Peer reviewedSmith, A. C.; And Others – Child Development, 1972
Specific aim of the study was to determine the predictive accuracy of selected observations obtained during developmental periods on later developmental outcome. (Authors)
Descriptors: Child Development, Discriminant Analysis, Measurement Instruments, Physiology
Peer reviewedCaskey, William E. Jr.; Larson, Gerald L. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
Kindergarten predictors, Otis-Lennon IQ, group and individual Bender scores, and teachers' ratings were correlated with first-grade Stanford Achievement Test scores from 152 children from three schools in the same school district and fourth-grade Ohio Survey Test scores from 102 of the same children. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, Correlation, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedNoeth, Richard J. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1983
Described the prediction of actual occupation from expressed vocational choice when enhanced by measures of career development. Subjects were junior class members of a national study who were working three years later (N=1,994). The Assessment of Career Development (ACD) scales did not contribute to the predictive accuracy of vocational choice.…

Peer reviewedClark, Duncan B.; Baker, Bruce L. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Compared parents from families (N=103) with retarded children who began a training program in behavior management. Based on posttraining assessment, low proficient parents were designated as lower socioeconomic status with less experience. A prediction based on six-month follow-up indicated low follow-through families had achieved less…

Peer reviewedShepard, Lorrie – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The California Entry Level Test (ELT) means are used with demographic variables to predict differences among California schools and districts on subsequent reading achievement tests. Factor analyses resulted in distinct factors for each of the subtests. The validity of the ELT was very high for its intended purpose. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Correlation, Factor Analysis, Grade 1, Predictive Validity
Peer reviewedSisson, Harriet E.; Dizney, Henry F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A regression equation incorporating grade point average (GPA), calculus grade, and grades in two sections of the Pharmacy College Admission Test was significantly more useful than using GPA alone. A minimum sum of scores in three PCAT sections was most effective. Cross-validation with new samples was recommended. (Author/CP)

Peer reviewedPulakos, Elaine D.; And Others – Personnel Psychology, 1988
Demonstrated that measures of predictor constructs had predictably different patterns of correlations with different criteria. In study of Navy recruiters (N=267), individual personality scales had significantly different relationships with three different rating criteria. In study with Army enlisted soldiers (N=8,642), cognitive ability and…

Peer reviewedMeeker, Frank; And Others – Teaching of Psychology, 1994
Reports study of 288 graduate psychology majors to determine what variables correlated with grade point averages in psychology. Reports three clusters of significant variables: (1) high school grades in verbal areas; (2) achievement in college general studies courses; and (3) mathematics aptitude and achievement in college. (CFR)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Academic Aptitude, Academic Records, Class Rank
Peer reviewedMcCall, Robert B.; Carriger, Michael S. – Child Development, 1993
This review of literature on infant habituation and recognition memory performance as predictors of later IQ concludes that the level of prediction is (1) substantial; (2) higher for at-risk than nonrisk children; and (3) not higher than the level of predictions based on parental education and socioeconomic status. (MDM)
Descriptors: At Risk Persons, Cognitive Measurement, Habituation, Infants
Ventura, Philip R., Jr. – Computer Science Education, 2005
The paper reports on an examination of predictors of success for an "objects-first" course. The predictors considered included prior programming experience, mathematical ability, academic and psychological variables, gender, and measures of student effort. Cognitive and academic factors such as SAT scores and critical thinking ability…

Roblyer, M. D.; Davis, Lloyd – Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, 2008
Virtual schooling has the potential to offer K-12 students increased access to educational opportunities not available locally, but comparatively high dropout rates continue to be a problem, especially for the underserved students most in need of these opportunities. Creating and using prediction models to identify at-risk virtual learners, long a…
