Jennings, Earl – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1988
Eight models that can be used to analyze data from a pretest-posttest design are discussed. Artificial data are used to demonstrate that comparisons among some of the models generate results identical to those obtained by using repeated analysis of variance measures. Such results are shown to be potentially misleading. (Author/TJH)

Blumberg, Carol Joyce; Porter, Andrew C. – 1981
Analysis strategies are discussed for the nonequivalent control group design when three models of continuous natural growth are known. For Model I type natural growth it was shown that the fan spread hypothesis always holds, and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of Residualized Gain Scores, and ANOVA of Standardized…

Davison, Mark L.; Sharma, Anu R. – Psychometrika, 1994
Three analyses of pretest and posttest data are considered: (1) posttest only designs; (2) two-way repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA); and (3) one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Conditions that ensure legitimacy of inferences about the equality of treatment effects on the latent variable theta are discussed. (SLD)

Schafer, William D. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1992
Discusses two approaches to data analysis in pretest-posttest research designs in which researcher has not formed groups based on pretest or used pretest information in assigning participants to groups, thus ruling out two-way analysis of variance. Describes use of repeated-measures analysis of variance and two-group analysis of covariance in…

Young, Patricia; Jones, Paul L. – 1983
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of two death education seminars to create in the participants a better capacity to prepare for their own death and to cope with the death of others. An affective death education seminar was presented to 28 health education students, and a cognitive death education seminar was presented…

Johnson, Craig W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
A simple quasi-experimental design is described which may have utility in a variety of applied and laboratory research settings where ordinarily the one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design might otherwise be the procedure of choice. The design approaches the internal validity of true experimental designs while optimizing external…

Sherman, Lawrence W. – Teaching and Teacher Education, 1986
Pre- and posttest scores of students of four introductory educational psychology classrooms were analyzed in order to find differences in achievement associated with a cooperative goal structure versus an individually competitive goal structure. Results are discussed. (Author/MT)

Sharma, K. K.; Gupta, J. K. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1986
This paper gives a mathematical treatment to findings of Zimmerman and Williams and establishes a minimum reliability for gain scores when the pretest and posttest have equal reliabilities and equal standard deviations. It discusses the behavior of the reliability of gain scores in terms of variations in other test parameters. (Author/LMO)

Wilson, Frank; Dwyer, Francis – International Journal of Instructional Media, 2001
Describes a study that determined how different types of dynamic visuals facilitated the achievement of educational objectives, whether the use of dynamic visualization influenced the amount of time needed to process the information, and whether there was an interaction between the amount of time learners view the animation and levels of dynamic…

Fitz-Gibbon, Carol Taylor; Morris, Lynn Lyons – 1987
The "CSE Program Evaluation Kit" is a series of nine books intended to assist people conducting program evaluations. This volume, the third in the kit, discusses the logic underlying the use of quantitative research designs, including the pretest-posttest design, and supplies step-by-step procedures for setting up and interpreting the…

Maxwell, Scott E.; Howard, George S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
This paper delineates conditions under which the use of change scores will not produce misleading results, and may perhaps be preferable to other methods of analysis. The validity of change scores in randomized pretest-posttest designs is discussed along with situations where analysis of change scores should be used. (Author/GK)

Hirumi, Atsusi; Bowers, Dennis R. – 1990
This study assessed the effects of providing learners with a graphic illustration of coordinate concept relationships to supplement learning from text-based instruction. Seventy-three undergraduate students were given a passage of approximately 1,200 words in length, describing Ausubel's Categories of Meaningful Learning. Half of the students also…

Klein, James D.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1994
The effects of individual versus cooperative learning and type of reward (points for completion or performance, or none) were studied with 126 undergraduate education majors. Subjects working alone performed better on the posttest and expressed more continuing motivation. Reward type did not affect performance or motivation. (SLD)

McCluskey, Michael R.; And Others – 1968
Six pilot studies were conducted to determine the effects of training on range estimation performance for aerial targets, and to identify some of the relevant variables. Observers were trained to estimate ranges of 350, 400, 800, 1,500, or 2,500 meters. Several variations of range estimation training methods were used, including immediate…

Carter, Vivian – Illinois Libraries, 1988
Reports on a study of the effects of participation in public library summer reading programs on children's reading skills. Results on a standardized test administered to 279 students in grades 1-5 in May and September are analyzed and compared for participants and nonparticipants in the summer reading program. (MES)
