Hatano, Giyoo; And Others – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 1996
Describes two experiments that investigate how "buggy algorithms" in multi-digit subtraction are used. The first experiment tested third grade students (N=110) and repeated the test two years later. The second experiment tested students in grades 3-6 (N=301). Contains 21 references. (DDR)

Lappan, Glenda; Winter, Mary Jean – Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Interesting mathematical questions that require computations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals are presented. The material is designed for students in the middle school grades, but many of the ideas could be used with higher or lower level pupils. (MP)

Talton, Carolyn F. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1988
The author suggests that, through using the outlined question model and suggested classroom activities, elementary students will improve their abilities to analyze routine, one-step word problems and make a plan for the solution. It is further argued that the same algorithm can be applied to multistep problems by using specified questions. (PK)

Blevins, Belinda; And Others – 1981
The results of an investigation of the development of children's knowledge of addition and subtraction concepts before they start school are detailed. The purpose of the study was to test the predictions of the three-stage model about the distinctions between the last two stages. Twenty-four children participated in the investigation. None of…

Straesser, Rudolf – 1980
This paper focuses on mathematics education in Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) in West Germany. The "dual system" of TVE, a part-time college/part-time on-the-job training scheme that normally leads to a certificate of a qualified worker after three years, is reviewed. Entrance tests for the trainee posts focus heavily on aspects of…
