DeLuca, V. William – Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, 1991
Eighteen undergraduates were given a standard manufacturing textbook and 18 a text in which major concepts were expressed as mathematical equations. The mathematical text enhanced ability to recall concepts and apply them in context. However, transfer of concepts to different concepts was not affected by type of text. (SK)

Parmar, Rene S.; Cawley, John F. – Remedial and Special Education (RASE), 1991
Normally achieving students (n=119) and students with mild handicaps (n=83) in grades 3-6 were instructed to create and answer computation items similar to samples given. Students with mild handicaps understood item characteristics enough to create like items, though averaging three years behind normal achievers. A sample instructional activity is…

Jones, Michael L.; Rowsey, Robert E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
Seventh-grade students (n=397) were studied to determine the effect on immediate achievement and retention of a unit designed to promote the development of estimating skills involved in metric measuring. Identical metric instruction was used with the exception of activities in estimation for the treatment group. The treatment group retained…

Freeman, Darlene; And Others – Learning, 1991
This problem-solving activity book offers tools for attacking problems in the classroom and beyond (a reproducible card set explaining problem-solving skills, a math problem-solving grid, problem-solving lessons in science, language arts, and social studies, and a poster following scientists as they fight to reclaim an endangered species). Saxe, Geoffrey B.; Gearhart, Maryl; Seltzer, Michael – Cognition and Instruction, 1999
This study analyzed relations between student achievement in the domain of fractions and the extent to which classroom practices are aligned with principles recommended by current reform frameworks. Hierarchical linear-model analyses revealed that alignment of classroom practices with reform principles was related to student achievement in problem…

Hecht, Steven Alan – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1998
Unique associations between three families of mathematical knowledge and individual differences in the mathematics skills of 103 seventh and eighth graders were studied. Conceptual and procedural knowledge adequately explained individual differences in fraction solving and problem set-up accuracy, but only conceptual knowledge adequately expressed…

Butler, Frances M.; Miller, Susan P.; Lee, Kit-Hung; Pierce, Thomas – Mental Retardation, 2001
A literature search to identify and analyze mathematics interventions for students with mild-to-moderate mental retardation found the focus of instruction has shifted since 1989 from basic skills instruction to computation and problem-solving instruction. Techniques such as constant-time delay, peer tutoring, time trials, and direct instruction…

Maredi, Mphahlele; Oosthuizen, H. J. – Computers & Education, 1995
Factor-Q is a problem-solving computer assisted instruction system for teaching polynomials in grades 9-12 that addresses the limitations of most problem-solving programs, among others, the user interface. The system is designed to help students master the skills of factorizing polynomials. It demonstrates the ease with which inadequately trained…

Baroody, Arthur J.; Wilkins, Jesse L. M. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2004
Fostering students' mathematical thinking requires regularly presenting them with challenging problems and involving them in the processes of mathematical inquiry (e.g., representing and solving problems; making, testing, and justifying conjectures). The Inverting a 36 Penny Triangular Array problem (called the Inverting problem, for short) is a…
