Peer reviewedWolters, G.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
Hypothesized that arithmetic calculating procedures and types of problems that necessitate more subproblems will lead to longer solution times. Data from 36 third grade students who mentally computed problems with sums greater than 20 and less than 100, confirmed both hypotheses. (RH)

Peer reviewedFuson, Karen C.; Willis, Gordon B. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1988
Ten teachers successfully taught first- and second-grade children to count up while keeping track with finger patterns. Learning to subtract by counting up greatly improved children's performance on take-away, compare, and equalize word problems, and enabled them to accelerate by as much as three years their learning of subtraction topics. (MNS)

Peer reviewedSchielack, Jane F.; Dockweiler, Clarence J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1992
Presents activities utilized with primary teachers to alleviate instructional concerns about using calculators and provide reasons for using calculators in their mathematics instruction. Activities address the topics of estimation, number sense, numeration, whole number and fraction operations, probability, and problem solving. (MDH)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Concept Formation, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedMisovich, Michael; Biasca, Karyn – Chemical Engineering Education, 1991
Discussed are the possible uses of spreadsheets in the undergraduate curriculum in chemical engineering classes. The advantages and flexibility of spreadsheets, spreadsheet instruction, graphing capabilities, assignment examples, and conclusions are described. (KR)
Descriptors: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, College Science, Computation
Peer reviewedSlovin, Hannah – Arithmetic Teacher, 1992
Presents an activity for representing a given number in as many ways as possible using short periods of time to develop students' number sense and provide the teacher the opportunity to make informal student assessment and diagnosis. Provides specific dialogue of the activity being used in a third grade class. (MDH)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Computation, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedLappan, Glenda; Ferrini-Mundy, Joan – Elementary School Journal, 1993
Discusses mathematical tasks, classroom environments, and means of assessment that might encourage mathematical growth for middle grades students. Proposes a curriculum emphasizing mathematical connections, reasoning, and problem solving. Describes shifts in the culture of the mathematics classroom that support students' development of…

Peer reviewedThoemke, Sharon S.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Emphasizes a real-world-problem situation using sine law and cosine law. Angles of elevation from two tracking stations located in the plane of the equator determine height of a satellite. Calculators or computers can be used. (LDR)
Descriptors: Computation, High Schools, Mathematical Applications, Mathematical Enrichment
Peer reviewedHawkes, Stephen J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1998
Argues that consideration should be given to whether teaching solubility product calculations is at all useful. Claims that experienced teachers seriously misunderstand and misuse solubility product calculations. (DDR)

Lopez-Real, Francis; Lee, Arthur – International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, 2006
As part of a module on mathematical problem solving in an Initial Teacher Education programme, the student teachers are encouraged to produce alternative solutions to the problems they tackle and, in particular, to consider whether ICT can help. In this paper we discuss a number of unusual solutions produced for some of the problems, specifically…

Sarrazy, Bernard – European Journal of Psychology of Education, 2002
How can it be explained that, aside from inter-individual differences, pupils in certain classes are more responsive than others to the formal aspects of a problem that has been set? The author puts forward the hypothesis that teachers differ in their ability to operate relevant variations in the conception of problems. The differences in…

Bjorklund, David F.; Hubertz, Martha J.; Reubens, Andrea C. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 2004
We examined the relationship between parents' behaviour and children's use of simple arithmetic strategies while playing a board game in contrast to solving arithmetic problems. In a microgenetic study spanning 3 weeks, 5-year-old children who were just beginning kindergarten played a modified game of "Chutes and Ladders" with one of…

Way, Jenni – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2005
This article presents an example of a versatile multi-solution problem that can be used right across the primary years. The basic problem is: "Noah saw 16 legs go past him into the Ark. How many creatures did he see?" Any even number can be used, although, 2 legs allows only one answer and with 16 legs there are already 14 different…

Gilmore, Camilla K.; Bryant, Peter – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Background and aims: In order to develop arithmetic expertise, children must understand arithmetic principles, such as the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction, in addition to learning calculation skills. We report two experiments that investigate children's understanding of the principle of inversion and the relationship between…

Mukunda, Kamala V.; Hall, Vernon C. – 1990
Two task were developed to assess second and fourth grade girls' ability to generate quantitative inferences and estimate answers to math word problems. The generation of quantitative inferences is thought to constitute problem representation, and the ability to estimate answers to word problems is facilitated by the presence of an accurate…

South Carolina State Dept. of Education, Columbia. Office of Research. – 1983
This publication, a result of the Basic Skills Assessment Program (BSAP), is designed for use as a resource or reference guide and not as a basic skills textbook. It focuses on that part of the mathematics curriculum which is reflected in the South Carolina State Basic Skills Objectives. Information is provided not only for the grades tested by…
