Levine, Gavrielle – 1992
In general, studies investigating sex differences in mathematics performance have empirically analyzed students' responses from standardized tests. This paper reports a study to extend the investigation of sex differences related to mathematics performance by examining cognitive and motivational factors as well as standardized test scores. Boys…

California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento. Bureau of Publications. – 1985
This framework gives direction for the development of mathematics programs in California schools. The introductory chapter discusses expectations and responsibilities: problem solving, calculator technology, computational skills, estimation and mental arithmetic, and computers in mathematics education; implementation of the recommended program,…

Sowder, Larry – 1988
This project was based on recent interview research which suggested that in choosing operations for story problems in mathematics many students are guided by computational considerations rather than meanings for the operations. This project aimed to refine the catalogue of strategies used by students and to design and test instructional materials…

Sheffield, Linda Jensen – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1987
Promotes mathematics instruction that goes beyond computation and problem solving, attempting to make children the "posers of problems." Addresses differences in hemisphericity, processing, and learning styles, as well as maturation differences, sex differences, effects of stimulation, enriched environments, emotion, and the control of attention.…

Mason, DeWayne A.; And Others – Elementary School Journal, 1992
Describes a study in which average eighth graders in an urban junior high school were placed into prealgebra classes normally reserved for high achievers. The average achievers in the prealgebra classes understood mathematical concepts better and enrolled in more advanced mathematics classes during high school, than did their cohorts. (GLR)

Galbraith, Peter L.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1992
The opinions of 98 Australian educational experts concerning mathematics skills necessary for future numeracy were solicited. The qualitative comments were incorporated into three scenarios reflecting alternative visions for the future: a careful scenario, a futuristic scenario, and a process scenario. (24 references) (MDH)

Van Haneghan, James P. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1990
Detection of calculation errors, operation errors, and unanswerable problems was studied for 78 third graders and 77 fifth graders. The relationship between mathematics achievement and error detection was also examined. Older children and high achievers detected more errors than did younger students and low achievers. (SLD)

Kaye, Daniel B.; And Others – 1981
This investigation capitalizes upon the information processing models that depend upon measurement of latency of response to a mathematical problem and the decomposition of reaction time (RT). Simple two term addition problems were presented with possible solutions for true-false verification, and accuracy and RT to response were recorded. Total…
