Fletcher, Rodney – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2008
This article presents a guided investigation into the spacial relationships between the centres of the squares in a Fibonacci tiling. It is essentially a lesson in number pattern, but includes work with surds, coordinate geometry, and some elementary use of complex numbers. The investigation could be presented to students in a number of ways…

Shaw, Ken – Journal of Chemical Education, 2008
This story is a chemical mystery with an emphasis on qualitative analysis, descriptive chemistry, and forensics. It is as well yet another article in the continuing series, first presented by Thomas Waddell and Thomas R. Rybolt, which presents a scientific problem in mystery format in the context of the popular and beloved characters of Sherlock…

de Oliveira, E. Capelas – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2008
We present a general formula for a triple product involving four real numbers. As a particular case, we get the sum of a triple product of four odd integers. Some interesting results are recovered. We derive a general formula for more than four odd numbers.

Bottge, Brian A.; Rueda, Enrique; LaRoque, Perry T.; Serlin, Ronald C.; Kwon, Jungmin – Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, 2007
This mixed-methods study assessed the effects of Enhanced Anchored Instruction (EAI) on the math performance of adolescents with learning disabilities in math (MLD). A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design with switching replications was used to measure students' computation and problem-solving skills on EAI compared to control…

Moore, Rhonda Bodine – Gifted Child Today Magazine, 1994
Gifted elementary students at the Center for Gifted Education in Columbia, Missouri, participated in a seminar designed to teach them the fundamentals of chess and other strategy board games. Students learned that beginning chess is accessible to everyone, learned problem solving and concentration, and created their own strategy board games. (JDD)

Kasten, Sarah E.; Sinclair, Nathalie – International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, 2009
Over the past decade, research on the use of technology in the mathematics classroom has focused primarily on issues of student learning and engagement. In this article, we focus on middle grades mathematics teachers' use of The Geometer's Sketchpad, and study both the decisions they make about when to use technology, and their motivations for…

Hall, Ralph L. – 1983
The game of chess is recommended as a school activity. In addition to requiring that individuals become actively involved in a mentally demanding competition, its effects are stimulating, wholesome, and healthy. Several benefits accrue from the teaching and promoting of chess in schools. Chess limits the element of luck (teaching the importance of…

Humphreys, Donald W. – American Biology Teacher, 1978
Inquiry is defined here as the scientist's method of problem solving. Presents a bent wire phenomenon activity designed to engage students in the active process of solving a problem in science. A model is proposed to explain the phenomenon. (MA)

Classroom Computer Learning, 1984
Suggestions for five activities are presented. They include: ideas for several student problem-solving projects; preparing a flowsheet and program for 10 coin and dice games; using word processor formatting commands to create word designs; creating sounds; and writing a program to print out sums indefinitely. (JN)

Dence, Thomas P. – College Mathematics Journal, 2007
This article presents some identities on the sum of the entries in the first half of a row in Pascal's triangle. The results were discovered while the author was working on a problem involving Laplace transforms, which are used in proving of the identities.

Harris, J.; Lynch, M. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2007
In this note, it is shown that in a symmetric topological space, the pairs of sets separated by the topology determine the topology itself. It is then shown that when the codomain is symmetric, functions which separate only those pairs of sets that are already separated are continuous, generalizing a result found by M. Lynch.
