Sullivan, Denis F. – Technology Teacher, 1988
Analysis of the typical training program provided to Japanese workers reveals a potential curriculum component that might be adopted by technology educators to teach quality control. The component focuses on the use of statistical techniques, participative problem solving, and creativity training. (CH)

Pintrich, Paul R. – New Directions for Institutional Research, 1988
Assessment programs designed to improve instruction should be based on strong theoretical models of student learning, motivation, and instruction. A taxonomy of learning strategies is provided. (MLW)

Fischbein, Efraim; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Over 600 pupils in grades five, seven, and nine in Italian schools were asked to choose the operation needed to solve 26 multiplication and division word problems. The findings seemed to confirm the impact of the repeated addition model on multiplication and of the partitive model on division. (MNS)

Sawada, Daiyo – Arithmetic Teacher, 1985
How children can be guided to see and feel the power of thinking with and about mathematical symbols is discussed. A strategy to help them bridge the gap between manipulative models and symbols is detailed. (MNS)

McNaughton, Alastair – Mathematics Teacher, 1986
A method is described for representing quadratic functions by three-dimensional wire models. This enables one to form a simple geometric concept of the location of imaginary zeros. (MNS)

Keohane, Nannerl O. – College Board Review, 1985
Good college leadership requires a kind of collaboration, it is argued, and creative collaborative work is the best route towards bold and effective leadership. Defining leadership, leadership models, leadership as problem solving, and leadership as taking a stand are discussed. (MLW)

Wagner, Sigrid; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Highlights major areas of research in mathematics education and examines four areas in need of additional attention: (1) the role of technology in mathematics teaching; (2) models for evaluating mathematics teaching; (3) development of estimation skills; and (4) the role of affective variables in the teaching of problem solving. (JN)

Schumaker, Jean B.; And Others – Techniques, 1985
A Life-Planning Program addresses the transitional needs of secondary-aged learning disabled students via a process of problem solving, goal settings, and goal implementation. Among seven guiding principles of the program is that life planning is taught as a cognitive process, the program is student managed, and instruction is limited to short…

Masters, Geofferey N. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1984
This paper develops and illustrates a latent trait approach to constructing an item bank when responses are scored in several ordered categories. This approach is an extension of the methodology developed by Choppin, Wright and Stone, and Wright and Bell for the construction and maintenance of banks of dichotomously scored items. (Author/PN)

Kaplan, David M. – 2003
This chapter addresses the issue of when counselors should suggest to their clients that their family members should become involved in the counseling process. Family systems theory and its application are reviewed, with a special focus on issues involving communication, problem solving, family roles, and boundaries. Family systems theory is a…

Sophian, Catherine; Madrid, Samara – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
To examine how conceptual knowledge about fraction magnitudes changes as students' learning progresses, 5th and 7th-grade students were asked to solve fraction magnitude problems that entailed finding a fraction between two given fractions and then to evaluate solutions for similar problems that were modeled for them. When the given fractions…

Cartier, Jennifer – 2000
Past research in a high school genetics classroom has shown that groups of students solving computer-generated genetics problems differed in their application of assessment criteria to the tentative models they generated, and that consistent application of certain model-assessment criteria correlated with success in proposing adequate explanatory…

Shama, Gilli; Layman, John – 1997
The University of Maryland offers a physics course as part of the Maryland Collaborative for Teachers' Preparation (MCTP) project. One of the course aims is to promote the learning of the concept of a function through the learning of physics. Students learn in small groups through problem solving and with the aid of microcomputer-based…

Maskay, Manisha Harisingh; Juhasz, Anne McCreary – Family Relations, 1983
Presents the Decision-Making Process Model, a framework for working through questions that require action. The seven steps are identifying the decision; determining why it is needed; identifying alternatives; analyzing information; estimating practicality; and deciding on a conclusion. The focus is on adolescent sexual decisions. (Author/JAC)
