Peer reviewedFriedel, Arthur W.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1990
Discussed is the effectiveness of using analogies in chemistry instruction. Students' mathematics anxiety, spatial visualization skill, and proportional reasoning ability were found to be important aptitudes for determining chemistry achievement. The relationship between analogs and algorithms is described. (KR)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Algorithms, Chemistry, Cognitive Development
Peer reviewedMcGivney, Raymond J., Jr. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1990
Described is a nonmajor mathematics course taught using computers and lab experiments. Included are the challenge, solution, description of the first class, problems, successes, the syllabus, student comments, and the conclusion. (KR)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Mathematics, Computer Assisted Instruction, Course Content
Peer reviewedKiser, Lee – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1990
This aptitude-treatment interaction (ATI) study was designed to clarify the relationship between the aptitude variable spatial visualization and two modes of presentation of linear absolute-value inequalities. The modes of presentation include computer-enhanced instruction (CEI) and traditional. (Author/KR)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Algebra, Aptitude Treatment Interaction, College Mathematics
Peer reviewedBarba, Robertta H. – Science Teacher, 1990
Problem solving is defined and characteristics of good problem solvers are highlighted. The cognitive processes used in problem solving are discussed. Suggestions for methods which can be used to teach problem solving are provided. Research implications from mathematics education are listed. (CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Computer Uses in Education, Mathematics Education, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedMaloney, David P. – Physics Teacher, 1990
Students' conceptions of the concept of force are discussed. Possible problem formats and exercises are presented. The need for many formats and variations to help students' resolve their conflicting ideas about physics concepts is stressed. (CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, College Science, Force, Higher Education
Foss, Gilbert; And Others – Education and Training in Mental Retardation, 1989
Four curricular formats were examined for teaching employment-related interpersonal skills to 122 secondary students with mild retardation. Compared were the instructional effects of teacher or videotape modeling, behavior rehearsal, and problem-solving. The combination of videotape modeling and problem-solving was most effective in student…

Peer reviewedHutchinson, Nancy – Canadian Journal of Special Education, 1989
Three studies involving 44 learning-disabled junior high students assessed the impact of strategy instruction in individual, small group, and whole class instruction in one knowledge domain: algebra. The three studies are contrasted, outcome data are compared, and the issue of generality-specificity in strategy instruction is examined. (JDD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Group Instruction, Individual Instruction, Instructional Effectiveness
Peer reviewedVenugopalan, M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1990
Discussed are the results of a teacher training workshop on problem solving and classroom demonstrations. The materials and topics used in the workshop are listed. Suggestions for using problem solving and classroom demonstrations are provided. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Demonstrations (Educational), Inservice Teacher Education, Laboratory Equipment
Peer reviewedJohnson, Richard T. – Childhood Education, 1990
Reviews the literature on the effectiveness of computer-controlled videodisc and videobased technology in the presentation of story information. An adult mediator can enhance young children's understanding of a story. (BB)
Descriptors: Adults, Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology, Literature Reviews
Peer reviewedDunkhase, John A.; Penick, John E. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1990
Discussed are similarities between college courses described as exemplary by the Society of College Science Teachers. Various strategies used to teach problem solving based on a three-stage model are highlighted. The process of identification of exemplary programs is discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: College Science, Course Descriptions, Critical Thinking, Demonstration Programs
Wolt, Jeffrey D. – Journal of Agronomic Education (JAE), 1989
Presents a computer program for use in teaching ion speciation in soil solutions. Provides information on the structure of the program, execution, and software specifications. The program estimates concentrations of ion pairs, hydrolytic species, metal-organic complexes, and free ions in solutions. (Author/RT)
Descriptors: Agricultural Education, Agronomy, College Science, Computer Software
Peer reviewedRyan, Janet – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1989
Discusses the lack of study skills found among non-science majors. Provides examples of how science courses differ from other courses. Gives some methods to help students study more effectively. (MVL)
