Hirsch, Christian R., Ed.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1987
Activities to extend the core curriculum through the study of the periodicity of rational numbers to help students develop calculator and research skills are presented. Four worksheets are included, to be used as discovery activities. A computer program is listed, as well as examples of periodic pictures. (MNS)

Economopoulos, Marjorie P. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1981
Challenging problems and project ideas for mathematically able students in grades 5 and 6 are reviewed. Number patterns are viewed as a good tool to introduce inductive and deductive thinking. Applications of mathematics in sales, the stock market, opinion polls, weather prediction, and other areas are discussed. (MP)

Fuson, Karen C.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1997
Researchers from four projects with a problem-solving approach to teaching and learning multidigit number concepts and operations describe a common framework of conceptual structures children construct for multidigit numbers, and categories of methods children devise for multidigit addition and subtraction. Conceptions include unitary, decade and…

Reimer, Wilbert – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Domino games are used to illustrate problem-solving techniques in a college principles-of-mathematics course. Students develop tables and use Pascal's triangle to find the total number of pips and the sum of numbers on the pieces. (DC)

Watson, Jane – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1991
A survey study asked Australian experienced teachers during workshops to rate what they believed to be the most difficult aspects of mathematics in grades seven and eight. Problem solving, number sense, and rational numbers were rated as most difficult. The research question provided a catalyst for action in professional development programs. (MDH)

Mukhopadhyay, Swapna; And Others – 1990
This study investigated children's ability to interpret a natural social situation, depicted in a narrative story, and to use their understanding of that situation to generate and apply a mental model of debts and assets in solving problems including negative quantities. Fifty-one American students from a parochial school in a predominantly middle…

Troutman, Andria P.; Lichtenberg, Betty K. – 1987
Presented is the third edition of a textbook designed for pre- and inservice teachers of elementary school mathematics. The content was selected on the basis of its direct applicability to the mathematical ideas usually introduced in grades K-6. The content is presented in conjunction with appropriate teaching strategies, determined by research…

Resnick, Lauren B. – 1984
Research on the psychological processes involved in early school arithmetic has now accumulated sufficiently to make it possible to construct a coherent account of the changing nature of the child's understanding of number during the early school years. This monograph presents an account of how number concepts are extended and elaborated as a…
