Navigating Dual Roles: Governance of Statewide Community College Membership Associations
Galizio, Larry
New Directions for Community Colleges, n200 p91-98 Win 2022
Statewide membership associations are comprised of trustees and/or district chancellors or college presidents (CEOs) whose primary professional responsibility is the governance and administration of local districts and colleges. The majority of these statewide community college membership associations are nonprofit entities--typically incorporated as 501(c)3 and/or 501(c)6's--and their missions characteristically include state and federal advocacy, professional and policy development, research and district support services, and the promotion of the state's community colleges to the multiple constituencies of decision-makers, policy influencers, traditional, and social media communication platforms. The Community College League of California provides a case example of the work occurring in membership associations. Governance challenges are reviewed, and questions are posed regarding future directions.
