The University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, has begun the process of evaluating a strategic plan through the design of a performance evaluation system. Renovation of the predoctoral curriculum focused on decompressing the curriculum, adding flexibility, and improving basic science instruction and the clinical experience. (MLW)

A curriculum project to help dental students identify, reason about, and resolve ethical problems applied moral development theory to professional education, an approach not previously used. The project involved testing student attitudes and abilities and developing learning activities to promote the desired abilities. (Author/MSE)

A peer tutor program designed to reduce student stress, develop tutor skills, and improve the learning environment is outlined. The program focuses on comprehension of curriculum content, time management, study skills, organization of laboratory projects and study materials, and manual skills development. (MSE)

The practice of comprehensive or total patient care at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry student clinics is described. In response to current reviews the system is preparing for innovations designed to enhance the delivery of care and maximize the student educational experience. (MLW)

Three common arguments against formal classes in professional ethics are examined. A minimum curriculum in dental professional ethics is proposed and a proposed program in professional ethics in dentistry is appended. (MLW)

To treat the elderly more competently and to provide clinical training to undergraduates simultaneously, a geriatric dental program was initiated in 1976 at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. The program's current status and operation are described. (Author/MLW)

Since 1984 the Pew National Dental Education Program has worked to bring long-term change in the U.S. system of dental education by enhancing individual dental schools' ability to understand the changing health care and higher education environments and assist them in redirecting program policies and budgets in response. In 1980, the State University of New York at Stony Brook began a program, integrated into the program of children's dentistry, to train students in care for the developmentally disabled. Management of developmentally disabled patients is provided over three years, and represents an extension of pediatric behavior management. (MSE)

A seven-step dental school recruitment program includes: (1) a marketing survey; (2) a plan based on survey data; (3) recruiting materials; (4) alumni involvement throughout the state; (5) publicity in state high schools and colleges; (6) recruiting in targeted high schools and colleges; and (7) a mailing list for follow-up. Inherent in the meaning of baccalaureate dental hygiene education is the offering of upper-division courses in the theory and practice of dental hygiene itself. Restructuring the associate programs as strictly two-year, lower-division programs would require standardization of baccalaureate programs as strictly upper-division curricula. (MLW)

A study evaluated the design, implementation, and evaluation procedures in an experimental dental school faculty development program to increase faculty skills in lecturing and related teaching strategies. (MSE)

The curricular adaptations made at the University of Florida College of Dentistry to accommodate a deaf student are described. Because most of the didactic instructional material was presented in a self-paced audiovisual format, all videotapes were either transcribed or outlined. (MLW)

A foundation program to bring research on health services and policy issues into the domain of clinical scholarship is described. The principal approach is to train young clinicians for academic careers with major responsibilities in health studies at university health sciences centers. (MSE)
