A program designed to introduce residents and medical students to community resources for children and increase their knowledge of the factors affecting children's development is described. Trainees spend approximately one-third of their time in program activities that involve 25 community agencies. (Author/MLW)

The required first-year clerkship in family and community medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School is discussed. The goals and objectives and the teaching methods used to implement the program are described. It is suggested that community medicine clerkships belong in the first year of the curriculum.
