Case Studies of Curricular Approaches

New Directions for Student Services, n138 p75-90 Sum 2012
As students face the transition to after-college life, whether it be to further education or to the workplace, their choice of classes can determine how well they are prepared. Students obtain a broad knowledge of various subjects through general education classes and more specific knowledge through their particular discipline or major, and often choose electives to augment or enhance the knowledge of their discipline. Additionally, many students add official minors or groups of courses in such areas as languages, writing, technology, business, global affairs, or mathematics based on their interests or as a result of job market trends. These courses may, or may not, intentionally and purposefully focus on helping students make the transition to life after college. This chapter provides an overview of the career courses adapted by three universities to support the career transition process for each of their student populations. Course designs, target student populations, academic credit, and campus support vary, but all of the courses aim to enhance student skills including self-knowledge, communication, research, and job-search skills in preparation for student transition to employment or graduate/professional school.
