From Community Gyms to Classrooms: A Framework for Values-Transfer in Schools
Martinek, Tom; Lee, Okseon
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n1 p33-38, 51 Jan 2012
Although it is assumed that the values learned in physical activity-based youth programs can be applied in other areas of life, the transfer of values has not been widely explored. The purpose of this article is to address the transfer issue as it relates to physical activity programs and school cultures. The article begins with an overview of the role that physical activity plays in the development of life skills that kids need to be resilient and socially competent. Special attention is given to Don Hellison's teaching personal and social responsibility model. Second, a framework is provided to clarify how the application of positive life skills can be fostered within the school setting. The conclusion of this article describes how to develop future programs and effectively transfer values.
