Where's the Party? Exploring Current Alcohol Prevention and Intervention Programs across U.S. College Campuses

Alcohol use, especially heavy or binge-drinking behavior, among college students continues to be an area in need of prevention and effective clinical intervention. With the myriad of known consequences that are associated with problematic and risky drinking, it is crucial that there are evidence-based programs available and offered to college students to help support their emotional, social, and psychological well-being. The purpose of this study was to explore what alcohol prevention and intervention programs are currently being used across colleges and universities in the United States. Through the use of an online survey, college staff working in Residential Life, Student Affairs, or Health Education/Promotion provided data about the content and delivery of their college's alcohol prevention and intervention programming, as well as their perception of their program's effectiveness in decreasing students' binge drinking behavior. The results of the study were analyzed by computing frequencies and by using bivariate correlations to ascertain if there were relationships and trends between program content and structure of prevention/intervention programs and perceived program effectiveness. Data indicated that the majority of colleges are utilizing evidence-based interventions and several colleges are implementing multi-modal components into their programming. Future research is encouraged to further investigate the relationship between program content, delivery, and the effects of programming on student binge drinking behavior to help mitigate the onset of more serious alcohol problems in the future.
