Special Project: Leisure and Recreation Independence for the Blind and Visually Handicapped: In-Service Training for Community and School Personnel to Facilitate Mainstreaming in the Least Restrictive Environment.
Wurster, Marion V.; Lazarus, Simone Rollin
A special project was designed to develop and implement an inservice training strategy for community and school recreation on the inclusion of visually impaired children into existing community recreation programs. The project resulted in inservice workshops for 90 trainer/consultants, a book, and a self instructional study guide. Listed among workshop topics are orientation and mobility, legislation relating to the handicapped, and simulation of visual losses. An evaluation component measured participants' knowledge gain, feeling of competence in workshop subject areas, assessment of the workshop, and performance on practicum tasks. Among findings were that there was substantial gain in measured knowledge as a result of the workshop, many participants expressed at least slight reservations about their competency, and the majority of participants gave high overall ratings to the workshop. Among appended material are a module evaluation form, a copy of the pre- and posttest, a list of workshop topics, sample questionnaires, an evaluation form, and examples of responses to open ended questions.
