Manual on Functional Literacy for Indigenous Peoples.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Bangkok (Thailand). Principal Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognizes that to participate more actively in society, indigenous communities in the Asia-Pacific region must make the transition from oral literacy traditions to those that combine oral and written literacy. This manual is a practical guide for training future trainers of literacy programs in indigenous communities. Based on a more general training manual already in use in the region, it is particularly designed for provincial/district supervisors and trainers of trainers. Chapters 1-3 give an overview of the main issues related to literacy as well as how these issues transfer to the particular literacy needs of indigenous peoples in the Asia-Pacific region. Chapters 4-7 give trainers direct support to establish, run, and promote literacy training programs in indigenous communities. Chapter 8 shows the transition to continuing education. The manual has been conceived to support interactive literacy training programs where trainers are actively engaged in the learning process. In this sense, it adopts a learner-centered approach to training and functional content areas. In each chapter the objectives are set out, followed by an introduction, tasks, content, and review activities. Tasks are meant to stimulate learners' involvement in reflecting on the chapter's objectives. Where appropriate, extra materials are provided for reproduction and direct use by trainers. (Contains 24 references and a glossary.) (Author/TD)
