The reasons for the University of Michigan's decision to end development of a health maintenance organization are outlined from its different perspectives as an employer, health care provider, and medical school. A pilot program at the University of California, Davis, that incorporated skilled nursing facility training into the required curriculum of their primary care internal medicine residency is described. The goal was to increase the residents' knowledge in the care of geriatric patients. (MLW)

Counselor education programs are faced with a perplexing problem: with minimal staff, how can counselors be prepared to function competently in both an educational and a community-based mental health environment? A method for using routinely collected data from large management information systems for program development is described. The example of school lunch participation illustrates the use of time series data to explore causes for observed changes in performance at the various project sites where a program is being carried out.
