ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
The role of a school leader is an important one that has a significant impact on the school. To address this, some school districts have created an internal program that aims to develop potential school leaders. The purpose of this program evaluation is to explore the extent to which a local school district's Aspiring Administrators Academy can distinguish and guide teachers to prepare them for school leadership. Additionally, this evaluation aims to determine the extent of the effectiveness of the program based on the perceptions of the program's participants. Specifically, this evaluation explores the perception of the participants own leadership skills in the domains of instructional leadership, operational management, and community relationships. The data for this mixed methods evaluation was collected through a survey and interviews. 26 surveys were completed by current and former program participants, and 6 semi-structured interviews were conducted by current and former program participants and program directors. Based on the data, the program's outlined goals are aligned with the experiences of those who participated in it. Through the program, participants have gained generalizable skills in their leadership capacity that they can then transfer into specific domains such as instructional leadership, organizational management, and community relationships. These findings indicate that the program is beneficial for this local school district and its program participants. Future evaluations of this program can focus on the effectiveness of this program in improving the actual skills of potential school leaders rather than only focusing on the broader principles of leadership.
