The Perception of Effectiveness of Mentorship in an Educational Leadership Graduate Program
Nancy Coats Posey; Merlene Jones Barlow; Anita Mills
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lipscomb University
In this mixed-method study, the researchers examined the perception of the effectiveness of a mentorship program at Hopewell University. The researchers collected data through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with current and past students who had completed the graduate program in educational leadership. They also conducted interviews with mentors from the program to gain their perspective. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the mentees' perception of the effectiveness of the mentorship program. The quantitative data showed a statistically significant difference in perception based on frequency of interaction; however, the data revealed no statistically significant differences in the mentees' perception of the program's career or psychosocial functions based on matching by race, gender, or selection methods. The three themes that emerged during the qualitative analysis were relationship building, career engagement, and challenges; these key factors influenced the mentees' and mentors' perception of the mentorship experience. The researchers identified elements that help build mentoring relationships. These findings will help program directors better understand the factors contributing to mentoring experiences in leadership development programs.
