A Retrospective Study of the Pre-Matriculation Program in the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center

This quantitative study examines the outcomes of the Pre-Matriculation program at the University of Kansas Medical Center's School of Medicine, a pipeline initiative designed to equip students from historically underrepresented groups in medicine (HURM) with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in medical school. A student is considered HURM if they belong to a population that is underrepresented in the medical field compared to their proportion in the general population. This can include certain races or ethnic groups, students from rural locations, and those that self-identify as disadvantaged. The study assesses the program's effectiveness by analyzing the demographic and academic outcomes of participants between 2006 and 2016, comparing them to those of all non-participants regardless of HURM status. The findings suggest that all medical students perform at a satisfactory level across the outcomes (i.e. grades, STEP pass rates, and retention). However, students in the Pre-Matriculation program had lower academic performance compared to non-participants. The study further identifies significant correlations between demographic variables and academic outcomes, indicating that students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in medicine, regardless of program participation, generally had lower academic performance than majority students. The findings may have been due to the comparison of HURM students in the program with the larger medical student population who did not qualify for invitation to the program rather than utilizing a matched pair comparison. The outcomes highlight the necessity for a more inclusive and expansive approach to the Pre-Matriculation Program, recommending revisions to the curriculum, an expansion in the number of students eligible for participation, and the implementation of extended support mechanisms throughout medical school. These adjustments aim to address the broader structural challenges that HURM students face in medical school.
