The practice of comprehensive or total patient care at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry student clinics is described. In response to current reviews the system is preparing for innovations designed to enhance the delivery of care and maximize the student educational experience. (MLW)

A statewide survey of operative dentistry in North Carolina was conducted to provide an update of operative dentistry practice and to assist the operative department at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in making informed curricular decisions. The curricular adaptations made at the University of Florida College of Dentistry to accommodate a deaf student are described. Because most of the didactic instructional material was presented in a self-paced audiovisual format, all videotapes were either transcribed or outlined. (MLW)

The University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, has begun the process of evaluating a strategic plan through the design of a performance evaluation system. Renovation of the predoctoral curriculum focused on decompressing the curriculum, adding flexibility, and improving basic science instruction and the clinical experience. (MLW)

A critical analysis of a university dental school's 10-year experience with a self-instructional basic sciences curriculum is presented, focusing on development of the curriculum, positive and negative effects on students and faculty, materials and format used, costs, and other administrative considerations. A curriculum project to help dental students identify, reason about, and resolve ethical problems applied moral development theory to professional education, an approach not previously used. The project involved testing student attitudes and abilities and developing learning activities to promote the desired abilities. (Author/MSE)

A survey of 138 dental hygiene program directors found dissatisfaction with program assessment practices and use of assessment data.
