Described are aspects of the evaluation of the Detroit (Michigan) Public Schools' 1985 Chapter 1 Citywide Summer School program, a program implemented to improve the reading and mathematics skills of students from pre-kindergarten classes through grade 8. A random sample of 18 schools, including elementary and middle schools, was selected for evaluation. A survey instrument consisting of 15 scaled questions was distributed to administrators and teachers. Results indicating that respondents generally viewed the program as successful are discussed with particular attention to areas of disagreement among respondents and ways to improve the program. It is recommended that the program be continued. (RH)
