Self-Efficacy of Novice School Counselors Implementing Recognized ASCA Model Program Requirements

The goal of this study was to obtain the perceptions of novice school counselors regarding their self-efficacy in implementing Recognized ASCA Model Program Requirements (RAMP). Seven novice school counselors shared their experiences contributing to their self-efficacy when implementing the ASCA Deliver component and RAMP application requirements. At the time of this study, limited research existed about novice school counselors' self-efficacy in executing ASCA program requirements eligible to receive RAMP distinction during their initial implementation phase. The researcher utilized a generic qualitative research design to obtain vital information to analyze the experiences and perceptions of these novice participants. In the semi-structured interviews, participants were asked 11 open-ended questions to obtain knowledge of novices' self-efficacy while attempting to satisfy RAMP application requirements. Two overarching themes emerged from the data analysis process: limited training enhanced apprehensions in abilities and diminished self-efficacy in fulfilling ASCA-approved program components. The results of this study reflect the need for more specific hands-on professional development for school counselors and administrators. Professional development to increase their competencies related to appropriate roles of school counselors, performing ASCA model Deliver program components, and undertaking activities to earn RAMP distinction. Recommendations are offered for future research and further examination of school counselor preparedness for creating RAMP-ready comprehensive programs.
