Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Conference Reports, Linguistics, Psycholinguistics

Riegel, Klaus F. – Linguistics, 1976
The distinction between synchronic and diachronic linguistics is criticized on the ground that both approaches eliminate the individual from consideration and are insensitive to changes in the individual and society. (Author/RM)

Descriptors: Behavioral Sciences, Learning Theories, Methods, Operant Conditioning

Goldman-Eisler, Frieda; Cohen, Michele – Linguistics, 1975
Reports an experiment designed to throw light on the interference between the reception and production of speech by controlling the level of interference between decoding and encoding, using hesitancy as an indicator of interference. This proved effective in spotting the levels at which interference takes place. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Research, Psycholinguistics, Receptive Language

Oguma, Hitoshi; Iritani, Toshio – Linguistics, 1976
Some psycholinguistic interpretations of the Japanese language are made, with reference to the relationships between sentence structure and cognition. Features of the language indicating a strong interdependency between linguistic expression and behavioral practice are examined. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Cognitive Processes, Grammar, Japanese

Wiens, Arthur N.; And Others – Linguistics, 1976
A study was made investigating whether or not the two-person conversational speech behavior (mean duration of utterance, mean reaction time, latency and frequency of interruption) of an individual who is fluent in two languages is the same or different when he is conversing in each of these two languages. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Cognitive Processes, Language Patterns, Language Research

Titone, Renzo – Linguistics, 1975
A tentative classification of internal departments of psycholinguistics is suggested and a list of applied fields is presented. Applied psycholinguistics is not seen here to have a right to scientific independence. (SCC)
Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Classification, Linguistic Theory, Psycholinguistics

Oleron, Pierre – Linguistics, 1975
Reports on an experiment designed to study the role of letter stems in the identification of printed words. The stemmed letters b,d,g,h,l,p and t were used. Results showed that the suppression of the letter's body has more detrimental effects on identification than the suppression of the stem. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Research, Letters (Alphabet), Psycholinguistics

Tsvetkova, L. S.; Glozman, J. M. – Linguistics, 1975
This investigation examines in aphasics the loss of the ability to relate words to their grammatical categories. It finds that recognition of grammatical categories is lost in all forms of aphasia studied, but that the loss is manifested differently for different types of aphasia quantitatively and qualitatively. (SCC)
Descriptors: Aphasia, Form Classes (Languages), Grammar, Language Handicaps

Zinkin, N. J.; And Others – Linguistics, 1975

Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Intonation, Phonemes, Phonetics

Naumova, T. N. – Linguistics, 1976
This article discusses sentence structure and sentence production as an integral process that reflects the given situation as perceived by the speaker, and not merely as a grammatical combination of words. The role of predicativity in sentence production is outlined. (CLK)
