To test the reliability of children's reporting as compared with that of their mothers, a highly structured psychiatric diagnostic interview was used with 307 Ss, ages 6 through 16. To distinguish disturbed children from normal children, similar structured diagnostic interviews about the child were given by different interviewers to a cohort of 307 mother-child pairs (children 6 to 16 years old). Psychometric properties of the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC) were evaluated with 834 normal adolescents and 93 adolescent suicide attempters. Positive correlations with depression and depressive attributional style were found for the suicide attempter group. These and other results are discussed in terms of the utility of the HSC. (JW)
