A short form of the MMPI, the Improved Readability Form (IRF), was shown to contain items that were more readable, more stable, and less ambiguous than excluded items. Critiqued and reanalyzed a recent study of the validity of five Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) alcoholism scales. The original study concluded that these scales were invalid in terms of classifying patients in regard to alcoholic status. Reanalysis provides evidence for the validity of four of the five scales. Tested the hypothesis that subjects with elevated MMPI profiles would exhibit qualitatively different word associations from those with normal MMPI profiles. MMPI values were used to find the relationship of field dependency to personality traits and styles of pathological adjustment in psychiatric outpatients.
