Multicultural Awareness and Implicit Racial Biases among Teachers
Sydney T. Donovan
ProQuest LLC, D.Psy. Dissertation, Adelphi University
In this study, implicit racial bias among teachers was investigated by utilizing the Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey (TMAS) and the Implicit Association Test (IAT), with a focus on the "Race Test." The research aimed to analyze the correlation between these biases and teachers' multicultural awareness within Long Island public school districts. By exploring implicit biases, the study sought to understand the relationship between these biases and teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward multiculturalism in education. The results of the correlational analysis among 30 participants (25 female, 5 male) revealed significant associations between implicit racial bias, as measured by the IAT, and teachers' multicultural awareness, as assessed by the TMAS. Specifically, higher levels of implicit bias were found to be correlated with less multicultural awareness among teachers. These findings highlighted the importance of addressing implicit bias in educational settings and the need for targeted interventions to promote greater multicultural understanding and inclusivity among educators.
